More bad news for Perez: Horner "frustrated" Checo missed chance in Brazil
Christian Horner is "frustrated" that Sergio Perez was unable to take advantage of Ferrari and McLaren's underperformance in the Brazilian Grand Prix. Horner sees a chance to make ground on both F1 teams in the Constructors' Championship slip away.
Max Verstappen won the Brazilian Grand Prix, and all but mathematically secured his fourth (consecutive) Formula 1 World Championship. Combined with the sprint results, it meant Red Bull took home more points than their rivals Ferrari and McLaren. However, Perez took home just one single point from the two races in Brazil.
"It was a difficult race for Checo, spinning at the beginning of the race dropped him down," Horner said. Thanks to Max Verstappen's 26 points on Sunday, Red Bull reduced the gap slightly, but still have a 49-point gap to the top of the World Championship.
There are now just three Grands Prix and two sprint races remaining. "Today [Sunday] was an opportunity in the Constructors to take a big chunk out of both Ferrari and McLaren and unfortunately we've not been able to capitalise on that. Obviously that's frustrating. We go away and have a look at it and come back hopefully fighting hard in Vegas," Horner added.
Will Perez leave Red Bull
After the Mexico Grand Prix, Horner expressed that sometimes difficult decisions have to be made. In the week between Mexico and Brazil, GPblog learned that Perez's final race could've been the Brazilian Grand Prix. Horner was asked whether the decision is getting closer. "Everything in life is subjective. You've got to look at the facts. We're working hard with Checo. He had a chassis change this weekend. I thought he drove a good race yesterday but today [Sunday] wasn't his day," concluded the 50-year-old Briton.
After the dramatic weekend in Mexico City, there were rumours that Perez would already be replaced at Red Bull after Brazil. The veteran himself denied these reports and had confidence that he will step into the RB21 next season.
