F1 CEO Domenicali confirms: 'Rotating Grands Prix in Europe very close'
- Nicole Mulder
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has shared that completing the plan of rotating a number of Europe Grands Prix is "very, very close" to happening. Rotating weekends between Zandvoort and Spa-Francorchamps have been rumoured as an example for this system.
With a record 24 races, the F1 calendar is bigger than ever, therefore, there is little room to add new tracks, even as many are hoping to host. Now, Domenicali confirms that measures are taken to make that happen.
F1 CEO Domenicali on rotating European Grands Prix
"We have some news to share very, very soon with regard to the possibility in the mid-term to have some rotational European Grand Prix and some other new options coming later. This is something that, of course, we will clarify in the due course," the F1 CEO said at a meeting with Liberty Media investors.
"It is true that we have a large demand of new possible venues that want to come in and our choice will always be balanced between the right economical benefits that we can have as a system and also to leverage the growth on the market that we can see potential that will be beneficial for us to grow even further our business," he added.
Currently, there are 10 European Grands Prix on the 2024 calendar - including Baku -, and a number of them have contracts in place until the 2030 season or longer. Monza, Spa-Francorchamps, Zandvoort and Monaco expire after next season, however, the principality is unlikely to disappear from the calendar.
Under the current Concorde Agreement, there could be 25 Grands Prix a season, but Domenicali thinks the balance is right at the moment with 24. "We believe that the balance we have in terms of numbers is the right one, so 24 is the balanced number that we feel is right. I do believe that all the propositions that are coming on our table is just giving us the possibility to make even better choices for our future," the CEO concluded.
