Amidst endings and beginnings, Ferrari looks to beat McLaren to the title

The Abu Dhabi 2024 Grand Prix promises to be one of the most exciting races yet, with Lewis Hamilton driving his final Grand Prix in Mercedes colours prior to making the anticipated switch to Ferrari this season. However, neither he nor Mercedes are racing for anything particularly important anymore with them being out of contention for both titles since practically the start of the season.

The driver he is replacing, nevertheless, Carlos Sainz, still has a chance to aid teammate Charles Leclerc in bringing back the Constructor’s title to Maranello for the first time since 2008, but to do so they will have to beat the almighty McLaren Racing team by a huge haul of points.

More drama in Abu Dhabi?

The story that dominated the paddock yesterday was the quarrell between Max Verstappen and George Russell. Brewing since their qualifying clash in Qatar last week, it exploded in the Yas Marina Circuit paddock yesterday with both parties dishing out comments against the rival side, with even Toto Wolff making a rather unorthodox and dramatic case against Red Bull chief, Christian Horner, going as far as calling him a "yapping little terrier". His chances of ever signing Verstappen to Mercedes seem to have gone up in smoke with the Austrian taking a contradictory position in the informal language row between the FIA and the Dutch 4 time World Champion.

However, another narrative to look out for this weekend is the fight for P6 in the Constructors'. Alpine is locked in a tight three-team battle with both Haas and VCARB. With Esteban Ocon ousted from the team prior to the final round, the Enstone-based racing stable will be hoping rookie Jack Doohan brings his a-game as he is set to replace the Frenchman in the car next to Pierre Gasly

Abu Dhabi will also mark an important occasion for Red Bull Racing, since the Austrian team appears set to axe Sergio Perez due to his never-ending streak of mediocre performances this season. A driver evaluation will be conducted by the team’s top brass following the Grand Prix, believed to take place on Monday and if all goes as expected, the Mexican will take his leave from the category and VCARB talents, Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson, are the preferred candidates to take over the second Red Bull seat next to Verstappen.

It is time to go racing one last time in 2024, it is time to feel the excitement as the cars hit the track for the final race weekend of the year: this is FP2 of the 2024 ETIHAD AIrways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
