George Russell has called Valtteri Bottas' return to Mercedes 'massive' as his experience will be key in helping Mercedes develop. The Finn will act as Mercedes' reserve driver in 2025, also taking on some simulator duties at Mercedes' Brackley base. The Brit also discussed how his relationship with Bottas has developed in recent years.

Speaking to Mercedes's official website, Russell commented on how nice it was to have a familiar face like Bottas return. "His experience is going to be massive. Having someone with so much simulator and racing knowledge, and who fully knows the team is going to be great," he began.

Russell: 'Bottas' knowledge of the Ferrari engine could be key'

"Hearing about his last few years at Sauber, with the Ferrari engine could be key too. You always have to keep an open mind as to what others are doing and he has all of that under his belt." Bottas' three seasons at Sauber weren't successful, but his learning curve still comes with a few positives. His knowledge of Ferrari's engines could help Mercedes develop and improve their own respectively.

Relationship 'has grown' despite previous incidents

The pair infamously came to blows in Imola in 2021, where they collided and exchanged some strong words for each other. Their relationship has changed now, Russell explained. "Obviously years ago we were perceived to not have a strong relationship, but we are both professionals and our relationship has grown, we often travel together and see each other at hotels or in the gym.”

The interview then took a light-hearted turn. Will the pair be swapping hairstyles? "Maybe he could give me some of his at the back, and I can give him some of my hair from the side – I think we would be able to make something pretty extraordinary from the two!"

Valtteri Bottas spend five seasons with Mercedes between 2017 and 2021. After his stint, where he won 10 Grand Prix and finished on the podium 58 times. He joined Alfa Romeo Sauber for the 2022 season. He scored 49 points in 2022, 10 points in 2023 and zero points in 2024, where Sauber struggled with a difficult car as they rebranded to the Stake F1 team. Audi will take over the Swiss team from 2026.
