Will Williams become a top team again with Sainz? 'Huge opportunity for us'
It is a special season for Carlos Sainz. After four years at Ferrari, he will now be driving for Williams in 2025. The Spaniard is looking forward to the upcoming Formula 1 season, as he stated to GPblog and other media during the presentation of the Grove-based team's new car.
What would be a successful 2025 for Sainz?
It will take some getting used to for Sainz. At Ferrari, the Spaniard often competed for podiums and the odd win. However, at Williams, the Spaniard will be expected to fight for midfield positions.
The four-time race winner was asked what he would deem a successful 2025 season. "For me, I assess a good Formula 1 season depending on the car I have. So I need to see first the car that I'm going to have this year in terms of what results I can achieve with that car consistently. And then depending on how competitive the car is, I will set myself targets in terms of where I want to finish every race. And then I can say that's a good season or a bad season."
'Huge opportunity' for Williams in 2026?
"What I can tell you, I think, in general perspective, I think as a team, our main target is to keep showing progress, and keep showing good momentum. As a team, we are coming off the back of very difficult years, but I think the last few years you can tell the team is in upwards trajectory, it's in a good momentum," said Sainz of a potential competitiveness outlook change for Williams.
"For me, 2025 is all about keep showing up and keep not letting the wave, let's say, stop. And I say that because maybe it doesn't sound very specific, but I think a lot of our efforts this year are going to be focused in 2026 and trying to capitalise on the huge opportunity that 2026 brings to the team. And for that, we want to be super ready and we need to use 2025 to make sure we correct a lot of the things that we can correct now to make sure we are ready for '26," concluded the Spaniard.
