Alonso: 'What Hamilton brings to Ferrari will be short of what Newey brings to Aston'
On Tuesday during the press session ahead of the F1 75 Live event at the O2 Arena, Fernando Alonso was asked who he thought would contribute more to their respective teams, Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, or Adrian Newey at Aston Martin?
In 2025 both Lewis Hamilton and Adrian Newey will be representing different racing colours than they had been used to for over a decade. The seven-time world champion made the switch to Ferrari, and the designer guru will don the British racing green colours of Aston Martin. But which of the two will contribute the most to their respective teams? The Spaniard answered that question to select media prior to the F1 75 Live event.
"Adrian Newey will always have more impact than any driver," stated Alonso emphatically. "Drivers come and go, the 20 of us here try to drive well and we have achieved things until we get to F1. I don’t know what Hamilton will bring or add to Ferrari, it will surely be less than what a designer can bring," the Spaniard added.
Newey will be unleashed at Aston Martin
Will the designer focus on the 2026 car alone, or will he work on the AMR25 as well? "Adrian is going to be a free spirit, you can’t tell him what to do. The day he arrives, if he can give us a hand in 2025, fine. If he wants to work only in 2026, fine too," said Alonso before elaborating further. "Because then he has clear ideas and doesn’t want to waste a single day. I asked Lawrence (Stroll) about it several times and he always tells me that he doesn’t think we can control him."
