Valtteri Bottas explains third driver role at Mercedes

Bottas returns to 'home': Here is what he will do at Mercedes

21 February at 20:00

"Good to be home", Valtteri Bottas titled his letter on Mercedes' website ahead of the beginning of the 2025 season. The Finnish driver returns to the team after spending three seasons with Sauber (also under the name Alfa Romeo). The third driver explained what his role will be this year within the German outfit.

"I'm back," the driver also quoted basketball legend Michael Jordan. Bottas joined Mercedes back in 2017, replacing Nico Rosberg, who retired from the sport after claiming the 2016 world title. Together with Lewis Hamilton, the pair helped the Germans to a constructors' title every season he spent there. Going back to Mercedes, he explained on Valentine's Day he also completed his seat fit. It was "love at second sight" for the driver, who still fits in the seat perfectly.

Experienced 'extra pair of eyes' for Mercedes

The Finnish driver is set to be present at every Grands Prix this season, providing help for his team. "Whether its set-up or driving, I’ll be trying to use my experience to contribute to this great team. I’ll be getting stuck into data, looking at George and Kimi’s onboards, providing that extra pair of eyes. Hopefully, I can keep driving and do some testing too," he began about his role.

Moreover, he is also set to play an important role in doing runs in the team's simulator. "At the factory, I’ll be in the simulator lots, doing development work for the W16. I’ve been getting up to speed with everything so far, learning about the new car and the plans for it this season."

He also promised fans some additional content: "There will be some marketing and partner days too, and TikToks of course – I think we’ll have some fun moments on social media this year, so keep your eyes peeled!"
