Liam Lawson is set to make his F1 debut at not quite his home Grand Prix in Australia, but that is the closest it gets for the driver from New Zealand. Many travelling fans hope Lawson could pull off a great result. What should be his goal given his teammate is the defending world champion? Former driver Martin Brundle shared his verdict.
'As long as he is on Verstappen's gearbox'
Many consider being Max Verstappen's teammate is the hardest job in F1, given the Dutchman's track record. Leading up to the 2025 campaign, Lawson has indicated many times he hopes to learn early on in the season at the tracks he is yet to drive on, and wants to take advantage of having alongside next to him to improve his skills.
Given the Dutchman's previous season and Christian Horner comments, it is hardly expected of Lawson to already defeat the four-time world champion from the beginning, but given what happened to his previous teammates, he needs to stay close to him. Martin Brundle, former driver and now Sky Sports analyst has confidence in the young driver.
"Liam Lawson has got a strong enough head to be able to cope with Max Verstappen. As long as he can see Max's gearbox on the grid and the rear wing in the distance at the end of the race, he will have done a great job."
The Briton explained he is not a big fan of predictions, even has he previously explained Verstappen will be able to defend his title in the 2025 season. Now, he explained that an exciting year awaits. While in the end he shied away from naming anyone, he said: "There will be four competing fourr contending for the title, and six of them winning races. I hate guessing, I am about content and knowledge," Brundle concluded with a smile.
