'Brown inquired with Verstappen's management about the possibilities'
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has reportedly made enquiries with Max Verstappen's management regarding the Dutchman's contract, De Telegraaf reports. Recently, it was announced that Oscar Piastri has signed a contract extension with the Woking-based squad. Brown reportedly investigated his options before the deal was made.
Zak Brown is said to have made contact with Max Verstappen's camp some time ago, where discussions took place about the possibilitites of signing the defending world champion to the British team. The CEO confirmed it to the newspaper that it was only a "single call" with the aim of exploring the market.
Ahead of his home Grand Prix in Melbourne, it was also announced that Oscar Piastri has signed a multi-year contract, reportedly extending his deal by a further three season. The Australian previously deal would have kept him at the team until 2026. Lando Norris also has a multi-year deal, reportedly lasting until 2028, so there will not be a seat opening any time soon in Woking.
Verstappen also has a contract until the '28 season, however, several performance clauses would allow the Dutchman to leave earlier. These clauses are frequently cited in rumours around Verstappen, and Toto Wolff also referred to them when talking about attracting the driver.
Verstappen not going to Mercedes and McLaren
The Mercedes CEO and team principal claimed over Thursday that he is no longer flirting with Max Verstappen, citing having a good relationship with both of his drivers, George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. However, neither the Briton nor the Italian have signed a long-term deal, as their contract expires at the end of the season, therefore, the door is not completely closed for the four-time champion to join. However, that door is now closed at McLaren after the Piastri announcement.
