"Vettel needs to restore his reputation with a win soon"
Charles Leclerc has won the last two Formula 1 races while his four-time world champion teammate Sebastian Vettel has failed to stand on the top step of the podium for over 12 months. As people start to question Vettel's talents, Mikka Hakkinen says the German needs to win, and win soon.
To add to Vettel's problems, Leclerc is now ahead in the 2019 F1 world championship. Not only is this awkward for Vettel, but team boss Mattia Binotto also has a situation on his hands according to Hakkinen.
"To win for Ferrari, in Monza, is a day that young man will never forget. An important win for him, for the team, and for teammate Sebastian Vettel. Taking the success from one race to the next is precisely how you eventually win a World Championship. Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto now has a situation where his number 1 driver Sebastian is being beaten by the young number 2 driver, and that could potentially cause tension," Hakkinen said in his column for Unibet.
Before this spirals out of control, Hakkinen says Vettel must find a win soon. The Ferrari driver spun again during the Italian Grand Prix and then he drove back onto the track into oncoming traffic. Fans, pundits and the media have started to question his ability and mindset inside the cockpit.
"Sebastian is a very mature racing driver and, as a four-time World Champion, he will realise that good times and bad times happen during every career. He had a bad race on Sunday, which meant that he could not even support Charles when the two Mercedes cars went after the lead Ferrari. I am sure that Sebastian will, of course, realise that Charles has done a brilliant job and that he needs to restore his reputation with a win soon," Hakkinen said.
