Wolff: McLaren "will be there or thereabouts, in my opinion"
McLaren have made huge progress in 2019 moving to the front of the midfield battle, surprising many in the world of motorsport. Toto Wolff believes McLaren could make it a four-horse race next season
After finishing down in sixth place in the Constructors' Championship in 2018 not much was expected of the Woking-based team as they said goodbye to Fernando Alonso. Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris have come in this season and performed admirably, comfortably winning the best of the rest award.
With McLaren way ahead of the rest of the midfield this season, the question that will be asked now is whether they can push on to challenge the front three. Toto Wolff expects them to do exactly that.
"It's fair to say that there are three teams capable of winning races today and probably winning championships if things are being put together," Wolff said.
"McLaren has massively caught up, probably the steepest performance slope of all teams and will be there or thereabouts, in my opinion.
"So, yeah, I see this very much as being a much tougher season. I don't think we are going to see the kind of 10 race wins or 12 race wins per team for next year any more – but obviously we will be trying everything to optimise our weaknesses and continue to perform well."
