Albon reflects on realising his F1 dream
2019 was certainly a breakthrough year for Alex Albon and this was reflected when he was given the rookie of the year award earlier this week. Albon has been reflecting on his rise to Formula 1 and Red Bull.
Albon was initially preparing to move into Formula E last season but a late phone call saw him called up to Toro Rosso following Daniel Ricciardo's departure at Red Bull.
After Pierre Gasly's poor form at F1's top table saw Albon presented with the chance to partner Max Verstappen during the second half of the season, which he will continue in 2020.
Albon's rise saw him awarded the rookie of the year at the FIA Prize Gala beating out his old F2 rivals, George Russell and Lando Noris.
"When the plans were made to go to Formula E as a professional driver, it felt like a big personal step into motorsport," Albon said at the Prize Gala ceremony.
"And then the phone call from Toro Rosso, that was a dream come true for me. Six months later I received another phone call to ride for Red Bull. It was great."
