Honda: "We felt it was the right thing to do to help our two current teams"
Honda saw 2022 as the right time to change the direction of the team. By 2050, Honda wants to be carbon neutral and therefore the targets had to be adjusted. The least they could do was help the current teams Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri with their own departure.
New goal for Honda
"We are committed to our goal of Honda being carbon neutral by 2050, which is why we are diverting our F1 resources to this new target," Honda's chief communications officer Koji Watanabe said in a press release.
"However, as a company that has been involved in Formula 1 for several decades, we felt it was the right thing to do to help our two current teams and indeed the sport as a whole. By allowing Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri to use our F1 Power Unit technology it should ensure they can race competitively, which is also good for the sport and the fan," he said.
Red Bull will certainly be on the road for the next four years
Red Bull and AlphaTauri will be assured of engines in Formula 1 from 2022 to 2024 by adopting Honda technology. For the time being, everything indicates that the engine regulations will be overhauled in 2025, a year ahead of schedule.
