South Africa is still doing everything it can to secure a place on the Formula 1 calendar. According to the CEO of SAGP, the organisation that investigates all possibilities, the aim is for the pinnacle of motorsport to move to Circuit Kyalami as early as 2022 or 2023.

It would not be the first time that Formula 1 travels to South Africa. The last time was in 1993 when Alain Prost won at Kyalami. However, for this season there are already 23 Grands Prix on the calendar so the question is which one can take over from South Africa. Or will Liberty Media go for a calendar that goes up to 25 weekends?

Jody Scheckter is now trying to convince Liberty Media to move to the African continent. “The target date is still 2022 but that could shift due to the effects of the pandemic, so 2023 is maybe more likely," the CEO said in conversation with Racefans.net.

Kyalami most suitable

Lewis Hamilton is strongly in favour of a Grand Prix in South Africa. Scheckter is delighted with the support. "It’s great that Lewis, a person as high-profile and influential as himself, has indicated his support for an African Grand Prix. Obviously South Africa is the most likely place for that to happen being that it’s a country that has a huge history in Formula 1."

Circuit Kyalami, located near Johannesburg, is 4.529 kilometres long and has a total of sixteen corners.
