Hamilton: "There's no real need necessarily to plan too far ahead in the future"

Lewis Hamilton was finally announced as Mercedes' driver in 2021 after a long wait. However, the new deal for the seven-time world champion is only for one year. He explains why the new contract isn't any longer than that.
Signed for one year only
Hamilton revealed during the W12 presentation that he did not feel he had to plan far ahead. "Firstly, I'm kind of in a fortunate position where I've achieved most of the stuff I wanted to achieve up until this point, so there's no real need necessarily to plan too far ahead in the future. We're living through an unusual period of time in life and I just wanted one year."
Winning not the only goal in 2021
The Briton says there is always a possibility of continuing beyond this year. Hamilton's priorities this year are also more off the track, rather than on it. "Last year there was a lot of discussion about equality and inclusion, and I think there was a lot of talk. This year is all about pushing for diversity, and really making sure that action is taken."
"That is at the core of the drive for me, but of course we exist to win, and that is what all these guys and girls here and working towards, so that is my goal, to deliver that for them", he concluded. Hamilton was the leader in 2020 when it came to fighting for more diversity within Formula One and he will not stop that work in 2021.
