With the rain pouring down in the Belgian hills, surrounding Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps it was a tentative start to Qualifying with the conditions chopping and changing. 18 of the 20 cars took to the track with the wet tyres on but it was the two Williams drivers who took the bold decision to start their session on the inters. Not long after they were followed by the rest of the grid as the track started to dry. Time continued to fall as the pace increased, but with limited time left in the session, the margins were getting finer and finer.
Lando Norris seemed to look at home in the damp as he topped Q1 0.416 seconds ahead of second-place and fan favourite Max Verstappen. Mr. Saturday George Russell looked fast in his Williams car as he took P4 with his teammate down in P9.
With the track drying drivers were desperate to string together a fast lap. Alpha Tauri driver Yuki Tsunoda fell victim to the conditions as he failed to get through to Q2 with his teammate Pierre Gasly finishing in the top 6.
Out - P16 Giovinazzi, P17 - Tsunoda, P18 - Shcumacher, P19 - Raikkonen, P20 - Mazapin
