McLaren, now using Renault power, have shown that they have a decent car but are not yet amongst the top teams like they would have been hoping for in 2018. Despite an up and down start to the season, Alonso sits in sixth place in the driver standings.
Fernando Alonso has said that the Red Bull result in China will provide a boost and be a source of "good motivation" going forward.
Both Red Bull's should have scored a podium finish but after Max Verstappen's indiscretions during the race, only
Daniel Ricciardo was stood on the podium, albeit on the top step.
Alonso finished seventh after a late race move on Sebastian Vettel but was over half a minute behind the race winner. Since switching to Honda, McLaren have had an inconsistent season and without power unit problems, there are no more excuses for the team.
"It showed us the potential of the power unit and it gives us good motivation that with this power unit we will be able to fight if we do a good job on the chassis side," he said.
"We are not quite there yet. We need to close that gap and we need to work harder on the chassis side.
"We know that we have to improve, no doubts. We can't hide that.
"But at the same time we are doing our job on Sundays and scoring as many points as possible for the team."
