McLaren haven’t had their best time in Formula One in recent races, scores points only twice in the last six Grands Prix, but Fernando Alonso reveals that the squad has more confidence heading into the race at Suzuka this weekend.
It will be Alonso’s last visit to the flowing and fast track in a Formula One car as he is set to retire at the end of the 2018 campaign.
The Spaniard has not had the best of luck at Suzuka over the past few years. It’s always been one of his weaker tracks, he has won only two races at the circuit in his career and has not finished in the points since 2013, when he was still a Ferrari driver.
Alonso has 50 points and is just three behind Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg, who are locked together in seventh place, with the Dane edging ahead after finishing fifth more times than the Renault driver.
Despite his poor form at the track, Alonso still has confidence for the race weekend and believes they can have more of a say on the proceedings of the race than they have in the last few weeks.
He said: “It could be a little bit better because the high-speed section should be OK for us but at the same time it’s quite high on the power sensitivity ranking so I guess it’s going to be a little bit more difficult than Singapore.
“We will see some of the strong engines perform quite well here. It’s true also the weather is not very stable at the moment so maybe that could help us as well. I think there’s an opportunity this weekend to score points and we will try to benefit from that.”
