It might not have won a Formula One race but Toleman was the starting point of a legendary career.
Ayrton Senna's first ever Formula One car is set to go up for auction in May. The Toleman TG184 was driven by the Brazilian in the 1984 season in which Senna almost took his first ever victory at the Monaco Grand Prix. Prices could range from anywhere between £750,000 to £1million as this iconic piece of machinery goes up for auction.
The race in question took place in trecherous conditions where Senna proved his talents to an unforeseen degree, almost winning the race against soon-to-be teammate and world championship rival, Alain Prost.
As the red flag was shown at the beginning of lap 32, Senna overtook Prost for the lead, however, the race had already been called and he had to settle for second. It was a circuit where Senna thrived, going on to set the all time record for wins at the track with 6, a record still standing to this day and one that remains unlikely to ever be beaten.
Images from the race show just how appalling the conditions were, the white and blue machine trimmed with the iconic yellow of his helmet, Senna showed just what a monumental talent he was that day. He finished his debut season 9th in the championship before going on to race with Lotus, McLaren and Williams winning two drivers championships along the way. Sadly his legendary career was cut tragically short after his fatal accident at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
