Daniel Ricciardo topped free practice two in Baku from Kimi Raikkonen and teammate Max Verstappen. Both Red Bull’s looked at home on the city streets while Ferrari and Mercedes struggled with the tricky circuit conditions.
Raikkonen’s pace was flattered a little after gaining a mammoth tow from Lewis Hamilton, who himself struggled greatly on Friday, off the pace in both sessions.
Verstappen recovered from his crash in FP1 to go just over a tenth shy of his teammate, he tagged the barrier on his fastest lap but remained unscathed much to the relief of his team.
A late worry for the team, however, might be brewing after Verstappen had to coast home with an issue at the end of practice.
Mercedes’ struggles continue as both cars were down on their rivals, Valtteri Bottas fourth and Hamilton fifth, a fair few mistakes from the pair didn’t help things.
Sebastian Vettel also was one of the big names to struggle around the Baku street circuit, several lock-ups and one on his qualifying simulation prevented him from setting a competitive time which saw him fall down the order.
Elsewhere, after initial struggles from all of the drivers on a cold and dusty track, Fernando Alonso showed teammate Stoffel Vandoorne the way, Alonso ending in sixth position whilst his Vandoorne was down in 19th.
Renault and Force India look strong and depending on where they qualify, could be on for a strong points finish.
Ferrari look set to battle Red Bull at the front with Mercedes struggling on one-lap and race pace. Early days but it could be an unpredictable weekend.
