Traditionally the Mercedes team has the nickname 'the Silver Arrows'. During the past two seasons, however, there has been little evidence of silver, as the cars of
Lewis Hamilton and
Valtteri Bottas have been completely black.
Get used to it
For the nostalgic fans it took some getting used to: a
Formula 1 car of Mercedes should be silver coloured. Yet these past two seasons the team has chosen to race in a black livery. This choice was made to support the Black Lives Matter movement, a movement close to
Lewis Hamilton's heart.
In the paddock there has already a persistent rumour going around, and
Bild now say it is absolutely certain: next season the Mercedes of Hamilton and his new team mate
George Russell will be silver again.
Foundation
The return to the traditional silver look, which first appeared in 1934, won't hurt Hamilton's cause, as his team will still remain committed to the Black Lives Matter cause. The Briton and Mercedes set up a joint foundation in early 2021 that aims to enable more diversity in motorsport.
