The 2016 Bahrain Grand Prix saw the controversial ‘elimination qualifying’ format in use for the 2nd and final time.
Despite a mistake, Hamilton survived an early Q3 elimination as four drivers opted not to make a time.
Hamilton made amends quickly and went on to set the fastest lap ever around the Sakhir circuit. Rosberg was just 0.077 seconds behind.
Sebastian Vettel qualified 3rd but did not start the race due to an engine failure on the formation lap.
As the lights went out, Rosberg went into the lead with a flying start. Hamilton collided with Bottas in turn one pushing Lewis down to 9th.
Nico Rosberg remained out in front for the remainder of the race collecting the full 25 points on offer.
Kimi Raikkonen was second to cross the line whilst Hamilton clawed his way back through the field to complete the podium.
Stoffel Vandoorne came home with a point in his debut race for McLaren despite his teammate Jenson Button retiring.
Haas, on just their second race, managed to get Grosjean into 5th place just behind Ricciardo.
Fast forwarding to the present and Vandoorne will be much more confident returning to his debut track with a much more powerful engine in the back of his McLaren.
Haas will also look at their performance in 2016 and aim to top it after showing impressive pace in Australia.
