McLaren’s racing director Eric Boullier suggests claims that he’ll step down are nonsense. The Frenchman went on to insist he still believes he has the ability to turn McLaren back into a top team.
With Honda’s engine reliability removed, light has been shed on other areas of McLaren’s car. The bodywork and aerodynamics have once again become a limiting factor in the performance of the Woking-based outfit.
McLaren had a heap of changes brought in for the Spanish Grand Prix. These included a new nose that attracted plenty of attention. But these didn’t help the team get both drivers back to where they want to be.
Boullier has started to fight his corner after fans expect him to step down. He looked back at previous experiences to explain he is still the man.
“In the past, I have managed, revitalised and restructured several teams, and I have won with all of them in all categories,” said Boullier.
“I believe in the people we have, I believe in the managers, you always want strong leadership.
“We know what we have to do we, we have to improve in reliability and performance, now there are other teams with the same engine so we have references, it’s a long road.”
McLaren’s Fernando Alonso is one of only 3 drivers to score points in every race this season. However, his Belgian team-mate, Vandoorne, has scored 24 fewer points than Alonso.
There’s plenty of work for McLaren to do, and perhaps they put too much pressure and expectation on themselves during the winter.
