Carlos Sainz has driven for a number of Formula 1 teams but is yet to be given an opportunity at one of the big three. Having driven for
Toro Rosso many thought the natural progression would be to get a drive at
Red Bull but that never came. Instead, the Spaniard moved to
Renault and then
McLaren after his time at Toro Rosso.
"When I was at Toro Rosso, I was really sorry that the opportunity never came, because I think that in 2015 I had a good first year," Sainz said to
F1Only.fr. "In 2016 and 2017, I flew to a high level, and I think if it was another driver, he would have been placed at Red Bull.
"But in the years when I did very well with Toro Rosso, Red Bull was busy with two other drivers, Max Verstappen, and Daniel Ricciardo. I think I was in the wrong place at the wrong time because both drivers were fine, and it was quite normal that they would not want to change.
"Then I looked for an alternative and I went to Renault to finally land at McLaren, which I am happy now. "I do not feel any anger, because in the team I'm currently in, I think I can not be at a better place. I'm fine, I'm happy and I do not miss it."
Sainz will hope that McLaren become a top team in the next few seasons and that he can start winning races and consistently getting on the podium.
