Karun Chandhok has spoken out on
Robert Kubica’s return to
Formula 1 and believes it is
“one of the great human stories” in the sport.
Kubica returns to competitive Formula 1 racing following eight years out after he suffered a near-fatal rally car accident.
Despite a long road to recovery Kubica makes his second F1 debut with
Williams partnering George Russell, who makes his first debut with the team after winning Formula 2 in 2018.
Speaking at the Autosport International event Chandhok said: “In the pit lane, a lot of good stories take place, and Kubica's return is one of them."
Chandhok competed against Kubica during the 2010 season, making 11 entries during his time at HRT between Bahrain 2010 and Germany 2011 and the Indian revealed that his friend's comeback is a great Formula 1 story.
"You can not play that down, he was almost at the door of heaven.
"I'm not exaggerating, for a short while he was very close to death,” revealed Chandhok.
"Robert is a friend and it's fantastic to see him driving again.
"This is one of the great human stories in Formula One.”
