The lives of Formula 1 teams largely take place far from home. One week in Azerbaijan, the following week visiting the other side of the world in Miami. Teams travel quite a bit, and now Ferrari's team have calculated how many miles will be covered by its staff in 2023.
Sergio Bondi is head of logistics at Ferrari, responsible for ensuring that all materials and people arrive at the right place at the right time. Considerable distances covered by everyone from the F1 world was obvious. But how much? "Approximately 230,000 kilometres over the year," Bondi informed GPblog via his team, just under 143,000 miles.
Keeping all the travelling as smooth as possible is a big operation. "The biggest challenge is to find the best possible travel routes and carriers which allow us to reduce the personnel’s exposure to the negative effects of travel, such as jet lag and stress. That means looking at a wide range of options such as charter flights or scheduled flights that best fit with the need for rest and the timetable at the track. In terms of hotels, the first priority is to be as close as possible to the track to limit travel time on the ground."
The season consists of 23 Grands Prix. In 2024, there are even 24 races scheduled, so the number of trips to be made will increase further. For Bondi, a new puzzle to solve.
