Red Bull Racing accustomed to providing lightning-fast and flawless pit stops for years, in Bahrain, saw its service performance go completely wrong three times.
Once, Max Verstappen's right front wheel did not come off immediately, and twice the light panel that gives the driver permission to leave the pit box did not work.
It was quite remarkable: Not only Red Bull, but also Mercedes, had electronic problems during the Bahrain Grand Prix. Coincidence? Christian Horner, the team principal foir Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda's team, said after the race to, among others, GPblog, that this needs to be investigated. At least the Brit had a first idea of what caused the problems during his team's stops.
"I think we need to look into it. I've just heard that there was some kind of wiring or electrical issue with the gantries. It's one I certainly haven’t seen before. The drivers live by those traffic lights. The actual stops were pretty good – two-second stops – and then the drivers were waiting for the lights, which obviously didn’t go out. So everything’s gone into quarantine. We’ll have a good look at it", said Horner.
Shortly after, the team principal delved deeper into the issue: "Well, Max came in for the first stop and the light didn’t do anything. It’s a very simple system that we expected would work. The button hadn’t been pressed hard enough by one of the technicians."
"The next pit stop was within one minute, and it happened again. At that point, we went into a manual override on the system and the chief mechanic released the car."
