The FIA is hoping to remove the ‘DRS’ from F1 cars in 2021. This move could become part of the shake-up expected to hit the sport in just three years time.
The Drag Reduction System (DRS) was introduced in 2011 and helps to enhance overtaking. Nikolas Tombazis, the governing body’s technical chief, has been discussing the matter.
“It is right that there’s the underlying discomfort with DRS, and I share it as well,” said Tombazis.
“I know Ross has made similar comments, and so on. We feel that DRS is the right thing to have in the present state of things.”
This is hardly surprising as fans have voiced their opinion on the lack of overtaking in F1 over recent years. The latest outcry came after the race in Melbourne earlier this year.
But with improvements coming to the cars in 2021, Tombazis believes they’ll have a chance to remove DRS.
“And for 2021, we hope that the cars will be much more able to follow each other closely, and it will be a really nice outcome if we can severely decrease DRS in the future, or even eliminate it.”
