McLaren driver
Fernando Alonso will notch up Grand Prix number 300 this weekend in Canada. He made his debut 17 years ago in Australia.
The 36-year-old has totalled 32 wins throughout his lengthy career. He comes up just short of his 100th podium. As is well documented, the Spaniard has struggled in the last four years whilst driving an underpowered McLaren.
His last win came in his final home Grand Prix for
Ferrari in 2013. Which for a driver of Fernando’s talents, a win is well overdue. He’s now on the pursuit to win motorsports triple crown having already won the Monaco Grand Prix back to back in 06 and 07.
Last season Alonso missed the Monaco race to take part in the Indy 500. This year he is racing in the WEC and will compete in Le Mans.
But is this Fernando’s last milestone? It’s looking increasingly likely that he will leave
Formula 1 at the end of this year. As stated, he’s in pursuit of the triple crown and interest in F1 is diminishing rapidly.
Seemingly, only Kimi Raikkonen’s seat at Ferrari would save the two-time World Champion from departure, and that is unlikely to happen.
He will become only the 4th driver to have raced in over 300 Grands Prix. If he finishes this season, he will become 2nd on the all-time list but will need to go another season before taking Ruben Barrichello’s record of 326.
