Former Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa believes Max Verstappen is a perfect example of how drivers escalate through the racing categories too quickly. Verstappen spent just one season in F3 before moving to F1 in 2015.
Yesterday, Massa explained his plans of changing the karting program which will introduce more unity around the world. Verstappen started karting when he was just four years old, but only had that single year between karting and F1.
“We see that so many drivers now the mentality is they need to go as quick as they can to open wheels, which is wrong in the end,” said Massa, the newly appointed president of CIK-FIA karting body.
“You need to move the categories when you are 100% ready to be in terms of experience. I think [in] karting we see so many drivers are 14 or 15 and thinking about single-seater.”
And Felipe believes it’s Verstappen’s fast propel to the top which has inspired the teenagers and their parents to move up quickly as well.
“I think we need to show to the drivers, even to the fathers, that you have the right time to do it,” added Massa.
