Mercedes won’t race in Canada with their new, upgraded engine because of reliability issues.
Toto Wolff said yesterday how the team planned to bring in the upgrade at the perfect time.
The new Mercedes power unit will now be installed for the French Grand Prix in two weeks time following Sunday’s race. Customers Force India and Williams will also miss out on the upgrade.
A Mercedes spokesman said: “All Mercedes-powered cars will be running with PU1 for this weekend, too, before receiving new units in France.”
Renault and Honda have confirmed their upgrade introduction is still taking place in Montreal. Some drivers within their teams and customers may not use the upgrade to avoid penalties. The 2018 rules only allow for three PU’s during the whole season.
It’s one of
Lewis Hamilton’s favourite tracks, he had his maiden victory in Montreal and if he wins on Sunday, he will equal Michael Schumacher’s 7 Grand Prix wins in Canada. It is unlikely to affect Hamilton’s preparation.
