Mohammed Ben Sulayem has spoken out against online abuse. The FIA president believes everyone should unite to take action against the growing toxicity, which FIA employees are also increasingly falling victim to.
In a column for Autosport.com Sulayem writes that online abuse has "become a blight on the sport" and that the level of toxicity has reached a crisis point. Therefore, the FIA president believes it is time for action to be taken and he believes everyone should do their bit.
As an example, he cites FIA steward Silvia Bellot, who received death threats after the controversial decision to give Fernando Alonso a 30-second time penalty at the US Grand Prix. The penalty was reversed after protests from Alpine. According to Sulayem, several FIA employees have been targets of online hatred and harassment in recent years.
The FIA president called it "totally unacceptable" for volunteers, officials and employees of the governing body to be subjected to such abuse and feared that if it continues like this, no one will want to hold a top position within the FIA. "If this continues it will destroy our sport," argues Sulayem, who believes that everyone in the sport has a role to play in fighting online abuse. That means the teams and drivers, but also the media and fans.
A campaign will be launched in the coming months, building on the cooperation between the FIA and Formula 1 through the Drive It Out initiative, in which F1 has previously spoken out against all forms of hate and abuse. At the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the FIA president will elaborate further on the new campaign. "I urge the entire motorsport ecosystem to take a stand. We must call it out. It has to stop," Sulayem said.
How about as a fan you keep opinions on drivers and teams to yourself and just support racing. I'm a merc fan but was delighted to see max win the title this year. It's change which makes the sport better and more appealing to fans which inturn brings more money into the sport
Lol,FIA. You guys made it popular to broadcast drivers shouting profanities at their teams,Team Principals shouting at the Race Director and showing replays of Team Principals throwing tantrums like 4 year olds, smashing their desks etc..... The current state of success of F1 has got less to do with the best drivers in the best cars on the best tracks.....no,the drivers have to be part of this soap opera where the media baits them into criticizing the opposition rather than respecting them. FIA has created this soap opera of drama and grown adults acting like siblings fighting. That attracts the type of audience you would expect that likes the artificial drama being created. It is the same type of fans I think is attracted to the Kardinians and Desperate something or another.... They wouldn't know the difference between a V6,V12 or vibrator. That's why the only love for the sport for them is only about the driver, maybe the team. They all spend days shouting insults at each other and disrespecting drivers that have achieved more than they can probably ever hope for. But beyond that, they do not understand the cars, don't understand the engineering side of it,the efficiency side of it,how teams have to operate as a unit and the fact that it doesn't matter how good the driver is,he needs the team to deliver him a competitive car, strategy, slick pit stops and much more that happens behind the scenes. That's why the insults all are mainly about the drivers and team Principals.... So,FIA,you created this world, took the sport away from the purist to the masses and this is what you get,you reap what you sow etc. Keep growing your fanbase into the mindless hord that can't have enough of the Max vs Ham insults, that don't realize how privileged they are to see these two drivers at the top of their game entertaining us,in cars that probably looks the best they have in many a year..
FIA 2019 - enough with lewis for the 6th time world champion. He's done! FIA 2021 - now let get our new golden boy thru past 6th time! Lol
This all started with Hamilton and Mercedes’, formula one was relatively clean for years but once they came along down it went ! Down the drain like filth
A lot of this is being caused by the FIA themselves with all the bad calls they make. It's time they got their act together.
I have only one thing to say to Ben. Clean up your own house. The constant leaks, favourable treatment of a certain team for years on end, the secret agreement with Ferarri, and on and on. His claim no one will want to work for them is nothing more than a complaint they want these people to continue in the positions they're in and continue to be a farce. No one wants to work for them because the organization is filled with systemic rot.
Online abuse is an issue in every sport if you ask me. I play tennis as an amateur now. But when i was younger i played at itf level. You wouldn't believe the amount of hate you can receive from people betting on this sport, whether you win or you lose when you weren't "supposed" to. In F1, betting is probably less of an issue compared to football or tennis, but nevertheless, the hate is a constant thing. People get passionate about it, but when they get on the wrong side of it, they use it as fuel to spread all the negativity from their lives onto social media platforms. In this particular case, the initial 10 sec penalty on alonso was wrong. I felt bad about it myself, maybe annoyed, a bit angered, but it never crossed my mind to say any sort of bad word to that person because it is the wrong thing to do. Hate is never good. If you want to protest, there are other ways. Don't swear, threaten, stuff like that is simply wrong. Show class, maturity, education. We, as a community, fan base of this sport, are unfortunately far away from this goal.
You wanted to be a mainstream sport, this is what you get for being a mainstream sport, you get the love and the hater worldwide, now stop this nonsense of Sky F1 start banning media members that can't look past nationalities.
"If this continues it will destroy our sport" I would have thought that the FIA in partnership with Liberty Media already have that well in hand.
The fish goes bad from the head. Give someone a finger, take your whole hand. Ben thought that if he fired Massie, it would cheer Hamilton and his fans, which he could not be further from. They took advantage of this in their hate campaign aimed at Max and RB. With massive support from Sky, creates a false narrative and polarizes society. They undermine the credibility of the FIA and Max's championship. The FIA has made this happen by turning a blind eye to the terrible behavior of Hamilton, Ted, etc. As long as F1 and the FIA do not take a hard stance, cut off the innuendo and lies spread by Hamilton, Mercedes, Sky, nothing will change. Do you want to change something? get a grip and stop tolerating these people.
It was mer and lewis that started all this hate and sky just carry it on it needs to be sorted with it all
Here is the easiest solution: Just like I used to tell people...Do NOT bring your home life and issues, politics, etc... to work!!! Keep your opinions and issues to yourself, because once the door is open then it's fair game. You can't have it both ways!
British media is biased towards british drivers. everyone knows that. look how they are supporting lewis for his 8th title. ridiculous
Well, stop propping up average drivers like Max. This was never a problem before Max gifted a fake title in AD
Ok. Here are some proposals: 1. The teams themselves start behaving better. When you have Christian, Toto, Zak and co making accusations about each other and behaving like angry, petulant children, I doubt the fans will take much example. 2. Drivers behaviour. Do they respect one another or do they start making up cheating allegations, leave the podiums, and so on and so on? 3. The reporters like Sky Sports, Ziggo, Rai etc start asking themselves if they are impartial enough. 4. The FIA itself, is it impartial, or is it trying to manufacture results based what outcome will bring the most commercial revenue? Is it effective in its policing of the sport, or is it full of "human errors"? 5. And finally we come to websites like GPBlog who rile up flame wars in the comments for clicks and ad revenue. Somebody must tell Mr. Ben Sulayem that the fans are the last to blame in this story.
Red Bull must take a leaf. Example 1. "Hamilton has been widely chastised for his poor performance, with Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko claiming that Hamilton would have retired at the end of the 2021 season. Jos Verstappen, Verstappen’s father, expressed his delight to see the 37-year old struggle." 2. "Helmut Marko believes that Formula 1's former Race Director Michael Masi is a victim, and that Lewis Hamilton's behaviour after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix contributed to the Australian's dismissal from his role." There is a littany of examples where Red Bull have abused Lewis and it had led to Red Bull fans taking it online.
Yours is a one-sided, biased view, whilst in reality, the toxicity is all round the paddock!!
Exactly ? And don't forget the media who also has its part of responsibility in there.
Here is food for thought, if you keep rubbing your backside on a noble name like Lewis Hamilton you will eventually trivialize this mugging that has been directed towards Lewis, Mercedes and their fans. Pundits and blogs such as this one have turned F1 atmosphere into a sewer of toxic unfounded statements that are designed to garner hatred towards the greatest of all time.
What is so noble about Lewis? Do you know how much his carbon emission is? F1 drivers, especially those who travel private jets and business class hurt the environment
He doesn’t own a jet??? So he flies with Lufthansa? Economy seat hahaha. Last year he went to New York from Middle East just to attend a fashion show for one night and he was back tomorrow. How did he manage that with companies?
Here's food for thought! You are contributing toward the toxicity!
Lol, you look at the world upside down mate. It has been merc, toto, lewis and sky sports propaganda that has turned the f1 into a toxic atmosphere with their lies cheating an bad sportsmanship. O ye and the FIA need to take a look at themselves too and be more transparent and less corrupt to take away the toxicity.
I knew you'd be up here trying to make this about Red Bull. Neither of these examples inspire death threats in any way, shape or form. Yes, Hamilton is and has been at the receiving end of online abuse, like most other drivers these days, but a lot of the more serious threats have been directed towards those that are perceived by 'fans' to have been standing in the way of his succes, lately.
This abuse against FIA personnel’s were mainly started by one particular driver’s supporters (and team principal), plus media from one particular country, after their driver was accused to have been robbed of his championship because of the decisions made by one particular personnel. These same supporters also made death threats to the driver who brought out the safety car which caused the situation in the first place.
your comment reads like: "but but but, look at them!" this is endemic, systemic, whatever ...ic word you want to use. they are all quite at fault and giving examples of only the actions of one team only serve to perpetrate the toxicity. any change needs to include the teams and their communications outwards. more so though, it needs to start with professional media outlets. first step needs to be an international feed broadcast team that is truly international. a 3 sentence statement from Zak, Helmut, or Toto does less to incite the dregs of society than 3 hours of heavily biased 'reporting'. and never mind the constant 24/7 cycle that gives the statements by those team principals more and more echo. media needs to be the low hanging fruit that the FIA pluck, but there's no doubt team communications should also be managed better.
Yeah death threats towards Latifi and people cheering with the death of Mateschitz are really the mistake of Red Bull.
