The Grand Prix of Emilia Romagna is one of the few races where there is no threat of grid penalties prior to a Grand Prix. No driver has suffered grid penalties and no one has been investigated by the
FIA, for example by blocking another driver or changing parts.
That is why we will see a Mercedes 1-2 at the start of the race in
Imola. Behind it are two Honda engines, in the shape of
Max Verstappen and
Pierre Gasly. From P3 to P6 there are only (former)
Red Bull Racing drivers, because behind Verstappen and Gasly are
Daniel Ricciardo and
Alexander Albon.
Perez and Ocon tyre advantage
The fifth driver with a Red Bull history,
Daniil Kvyat, starts from P8 with
Charles Leclerc just ahead of him from P7. The
McLaren duo,
Carlos Sainz and
Lando Norris, will start from the fifth row of the grid.
Sergio Perez and
Esteban Ocon will be the first drivers with a free choice of tyres and will therefore start the attack on the top ten, where many drivers will have to start on old soft tyres.
