The Formula 1 season does not start for just under two months, but for Stoffel Vandoorne the racing year starts earlier. He and his Formula E team DS Penske will be at the start next week and should try to defend his world title. In conversation with The Race however, he also discusses his chances in Formula 1.
After his McLaren departure in 2018, Vandoorne did not find a team that could give him a permanent place in Formula 1. However, Nyck de Vries is showing him that it is still possible to switch to the motorsport class. Indeed, the Dutchman will be seen at AlphaTauri next season.
Although Vandoorne is not ruling out the possibility, he is not mentally considering it. "I’ve had my opportunity in Formula 1. And not only myself but I think a lot of people in the Formula E paddock and some other championships deserve to have a chance in Formula 1," the driver says.
Next season, he will once again be close to Formula 1, as he will be involved with the British formation as Aston Martin's reserve driver. Vandoorne expects him to quickly get used to the team's car and show himself in a positive light.
For the driver, there is no doubt that another chance in the motorsport class would be nice, but there is little he can do to change the offers. "It’s not always up to us. A lot of it comes down to the teams, what they’re looking for. From my side, the only thing I can do is keep performing. That’s the best tool."
