Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly has tooted his own horn by saying his tyre management has gotten a lot better this season, as the Frenchman has put in some excellent performances in his first full season in Formula One.
Gasly has exceeded expectations this season, as he's finished in the top six on several occasions in his Toro Rosso. Many of his points finishes are made possible by his crazy long stints on very soft tyres, including a 37-lap stint on hypersoft tyres in Monaco and a 32-lap stint on ultrasofts in Hungary.
“I wasn't struggling as much as the others were,” Gasly told Motorsport.com after the Hungarian Grand Prix.
“I think in terms of tyre management I've just improved massively compared to my first season in GP2, where I was too aggressive with the tyres.
“I've learned a lot and now it's paying [off], so I'm really happy about it.
“I think I could've gone for five more laps probably, but then in terms of race time was better to pit that lap and put new tyres.”
Gasly has been heavily linked with the now empty seat at Red Bull Racing next season, as Daniel Ricciardo has left the team to drive for Renault from 2019 onwards. Carlos Sainz, who has to give up his seat at Renault for the Aussie, is also under contract at Red Bull, but it looks like Gasly has the better chance of becoming Max Verstappen's teammate at the Bulls next season.
