Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly thinks that the new upgrade that Honda installed for the Canadian Grand Prix won him as much as three places this weekend, as the Frenchman finished in P11.
After an already qualifying stint from Gasly in which he qualified in P16, he was also penalized three extra places for fitting a new-spec power unit onto his STR-13. Nevertheless, the French youngster almost climbed his way into the points, finishing in P11.
"We would've finished, looking at the race, behind [Sergio] Perez I think, so would've been 14th," Gasly told Autosport when asked if he would've finished there on the 'old' engine spec.
"It was the right choice [to change it], because with the other one [it] would've been not possible to come back even from P16.
"In the end it was the right decision, even if we started a bit further [back]."
Gasly was one of the few drivers to overtake several people in on-track combat (rather than over/under-cutting in the pit), which is something the Frenchman also attributes to the new Honda engine.
"I overtook a Haas, I overtook a Force India on the straight, which is the first time this year.
"For me [the new engine] is looking good - promising."
