Unlike
Ferrari,
Mercedes has yet to win a race in
Formula 1 this season. However, the team of
George Russell and
Lewis Hamilton are better placed in the constructors' standings than
Charles Leclerc and
Carlos Sainz. Mercedes have a 20-point lead over the Italian Scuderia, yet Hamilton is still not happy with the car he has.
The last time the seven-time Formula One world champion won a race was some time ago. He last won in Saudi Arabia in December 2021. "It's still not a world championship-winning car," Hamilton explained to Sky Sports. "I don't even think it's probably a race-winning car still. That's what we're going to have to work on for next year," the Brit added.
Ferrari and Mercedes in contention, Hamilton positive
With only two races left on the calendar, it looks to be a difficult task for Ferrari. At the start of the season, Mercedes did not think they would finish second in the standings as its performance was not up to scratch. Hamilton is hopeful regarding the possible second spot, which may feel like the best possible position due to Red Bull's dominance.
"Either way, we're going to be fighting to try and stay ahead of the Ferrari and the fact that we are competing for second in the constructors' title is amazing given from where we started. So I'm really hopeful we can maintain that position," the 38-year-old Formula One driver concluded.
