It looked rosy for a while for the Mercdes drivers, but
Lewis Hamilton and
George Russell had to finally acknowledge their superiority to
Max Verstappen. Hamilton had to join P3 behind his teammate and hopes there is more to come on Sunday.
Hamilton came up short on Verstappen
Hamilton saw his first fast lap in Q3 taken away for exceeding track limits. He thinks that lap was good enough for the second starting position, he said after qualifying for the
Mexican Grand Prix.
"Unfortunately the first one, which I think was fast enough for second place, it wasn't good enough," Hamilton said. "The Red Bulls naturally are so fast, but I think this is such an amazing show and I'm really proud of my team. This is the best qualifying we've had all year, so just shows that perseverance and never giving up is the way forward."
When
David Coulthard asked where he fell short of his teammate, Hamilton had no straightforward answer. "
Generally, my laps have been pretty good," the Mercedes driver continued. According to Hamilton, there is still more performance in the W13 and he hopes to do something at the start. "
It's a long way to the first corner," he smiled.
