Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton has said he has no interest in signing for any other team than Mercedes. His contract runs until the end of this season, but the Brit expects his new contract to be done within the next few weeks.
Toto Wolff, Mercedes team boss, carries the same message. Both parties seem to be confident that Hamilton isn’t going anywhere in the coming years.
“A few weeks is a realistic goal,” is what Wolff predicted about the matter at the Mercedes presentation.
“Toto knows I’m not going anywhere, there is no better team,” Hamilton said. “He’s not going to look elsewhere and neither am I. We’re both confident and committed.”
“It’s all about the details now, hopefully we’ll finish it before the season starts,” he added. “There’s no pressure though, no reason to act prematurely. There’s no pressure from other drivers and Mercedes won’t worry that I talk to other teams.”
“I’ve never even talked to another team in all six years I’ve been at Mercedes.”
Hamilton is on his second three-year deal with the German team. As was the case when negotiating his previous contract, the Brit enters the talks as the current world champion, which should give him a strong position during the negotiations. Hamilton’s current salary is said to be around 30 million euro’s per year.
