McLaren has accepted a place on the Formula 1 for the first time ever, which gives the team a bigger say in the future of the sport. They’re the third team to be included, with Ferrari and Mercedes already being on the board.
Bernie Ecclestone initially offered the place to the British team, in order for them to take place in past Concorde Agreement negotiations, but the team didn’t take up on the offer until now.
“McLaren has had the right to a board seat for a long time,” said team boss Zak Brown. “I wasn’t there at the time so I don’t know why they didn’t take it back then.”
“Moving forward however there are a lot of changes to be made in the future, and we have a lot of opinions. We think we can help shape the future, so we took up a seat at the table to do so.”
The American will not be on the board himself representing his team, it will be executive chairman Shaikh Mohammed Bin Essa Al-Khalifa.
“Shaikh Mohammed is our executive chairman and my boss. He’s definitely the right person for the role,” Brown added. “He knows the sport inside out.”
