Brendan Hartley was surprised to hear the rumours about him leaving Toro Rosso after a troubled start to his 2018 campaign. It was rumoured that he would leave after Monaco.
The New Zealander has scored just 1 point this season whilst his team-mate managed to get his car into 4th place through Bahrain.
“I was surprised to hear that. I have a contract, so I was surprised to hear,” Hartley said in an interview with crash.net.
“There’s always a lot of rumours in Formula 1, so as a driver, it’s better not to read too much. I know that I’m a team player.
“I’m working very hard behind the scenes. I know I’m more than capable.”
It’s probably not the best thing for Hartley to hear, but this hard work needs to be shown on track. We know how critical Toro Rosso and Red Bull bosses can be. They've quickly dismissed a number of drivers in the past.
Despite this, Hartley believes he has it under control and his best is yet to show.
“I think people sometimes have quite short memories in F1. Things move very quickly, and from one weekend to the next, the whole story can be a very different one.
“There are plenty of critics. As a driver, you’re your own biggest critic.”
