Former F1 driver Gerhard Berger is doing everything he can as the boss of the DTM championship to breathe new life into the racing class for next season. The big German manufacturers have left and so the DTM was forced to continue under GT3 regulations in 2021.

That doesn't sound very appealing as there are already several racing classes using this format. However, the DTM hopes to distinguish itself by the short duration of the races and the drivers it manages to attract. Berger, for example, had for some time now Nico Hülkenberg as one of the big names to carry the championship.

Hulkenberg focuses on Formula 1

He would then drive in a Lamborghini together with Jacques Villeneuve, but that deal has been cancelled, Autosport.com reports. Hulkenberg seems to want to focus on a possible return to Formula 1. Racing Point allowed him to substitute a few times in 2020 because of the corona virus and that could happen again in 2021. He hopes to be in the running for a permanent seat in 2022.

At the moment the DTM field is mainly filled up with drivers who have also raced in this class in recent years. Only Alexander Albon has been announced as the new crowd pleaser, but Berger will undoubtedly want more.
