The 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has set his stool out on the current Red Bull driver debate. He insists that Ricciardo is the better driver as a result of Verstappen’s mistakes.
Christian Horner suggested Red Bull have lost between 60-65 points so far this season. Horner wants Verstappen to “hit the reset button” going into the Canadian Grand Prix in order to bounce back.
But Villeneuve seems to have joined Nico Rosberg by turning his back on the 20-year-old Dutchman.
“Verstappen makes mistakes in every race. It happens all the time,” Villeneuve said in an interview with Sky Italia.
“It’s a bad sign. For example, Ricciardo was not at all to blame for their crash in Baku. He did nothing wrong.
“If a driver is constantly making mistakes, he must calm down and slow down. But to be at Ricciardo’s level, he has to take more risks. It can only mean one thing: Max is not as good as Daniel. Full stop” said Villeneuve.
The current drivers' standings agree with the statement, as Ricciardo currently leads Verstappen by 37 points. The Australian has always finished the season above Max Verstappen.
