Former
McLaren driver
Kevin Magnussen hates to see his old team struggling to fight during race weekends even though it helps his current team.
The Danish driver made his
Formula 1 debut with the Woking-based team in 2014. He departed to make way for Fernando Alonso but still has an emotional attachment to the team that nursed him through his junior years.
Talking about the papaya orange team after the Austrian Grand Prix, he said it's a shame to see them struggling.
"I've lost touch with them I don't talk to them anymore I don't know the problems they're facing at the moment, but it's a shame for sure," Magnussen said in an interview on crash.net.
"I'm happy for us that we can compete with them, and beat them at times, but for sure, it's not where they belong."
Haas' 22 points meant they leapfrogged McLaren in the constructors' championship into 5th. Magnussen is pleased to be fighting with the big teams that surround them.
"It's an impressive thing for such a small team to be competing against the likes of Renault and McLaren, beating Williams and even Force India."
Magnussen still holds the record for McLaren's best result inside the last four years. His second place at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix is yet to be beaten.
