Fernando Alonso proved this year that he can still race at a high level in
Formula 1. The Spaniard stood on the podium eight times this year, while he is now 42 years old. Former race winner
Robert Kubica tells the
Gurulandia podcast that he thinks Alonso is the best driver in a non-competitive car.
Most people knew for some time that the Aston Martin driver is fast. He won the championship in 2005 and 2006, and he also competed for the title several times in the years when Vettel was champion. In 2018, the Spaniard decided to retire. Who would have thought then that he would still get so many podiums?
'There, Alonso is the best of them all'
Kubica sees Alonso's great performances. He therefore has a clear opinion about the two-time world champion's speed:
"In my opinion, Fernando Alonso with a non-competitive car is the strongest of all."He continued:
"I always say that F1 in the first two or three rows is a sport, but when you race at the back... The truth is that if you get half a second and you're wearing a Red Bull you end up on the podium. And even though you are a rookie, and you are a phenomenon, if you have a Williams or any small team it is difficult for you to be among the top 15."'Verstappen, Hamilton and Alonso are otherworldly'
With this, the Pole is not saying that he thinks it's entirely down to the car:
"All in all, the veteran participant estimates that the big 'cracks' end up making themselves noticed. "I always say that 90 percent of the drivers who came to the big teams were going to do it anyway, because you see Martians like Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso... You have to be very lucky to be in the right place in the right equipment and have a car that is easy to drive."
Between these two oldie drivers, they have been occupying a seat in F1 for a combined total of 36 years.
I would like to see some talented young drivers such as Lawson, Vesti, Pourchaire or Iwasa, for example being given an opportunity to be given an F1 seat.
I have always suggested that there should be a max number of years a particular driver is allowed be in the sport since there are only 20 precious seats available and one driver should not be allowed to hog it indefinitely.
An F2 champion, for example, is not allowed to stay the following year, so why so hard to implement this simple max no of years limit?
So what if they have been occupying seats for combined 36 yrs, there's a reason why. Because they are quality drivers, you prefer quality or quantity? Seems like you aren't sure, in another article a young driver was resigned and you were full of criticism for it, yet 2 other quality drivers you are saying should be off the grid. Smh. In sport as long as someone is competitive they have a right to be there, after all that's what we all want. Competition
Yeah, but that was a young driver who should never have been in F1 in the first place. Having never won a single championship in his car racing career and finishing only P4 in the all important F2 season, there are many far better young drivers who should be given a chance to be in the sport.
There has to be a line, between allowing talented and deserving young drivers to be in the sport and those who has been hogging a seat for so many years. They have had their fun and has earned the big $$ for so many years. Stop being so selfish and allow 'the next generation' of drivers to enjoy the sports too.
If George and Lance would’ve beaten them, then yes, but they haven’t, so they deserve their seats. Should Messi have quit after he turned 35? There are only 11 spots in the Arg squad after all. Plenty of seats in other categories.
Well said, Kubica. F1 Drivers Championship = Right team + Great car + Superb Talent.
