Charles Leclerc quite literally took his Sauber for a spin in the Chinese Grand Prix, which he has said ruined his race, as the car lost performance, meaning the rookie finished last in P19.
Leclerc finally out-qualified his teammate Marcus Ericsson last Saturday and did so by half a second, which was a positive sign for the Monegasque. He ran ahead of Ericsson in the first stint of the race, but Leclerc spun out at turn 1. Not only did it cost him a good chunk of time, but it damaged his floor, meaning his race was as good as over. He ended last of the drivers that finished in P19, as Brendon Hartley was the only driver that retired from the race.
The Ferrari Academy graduate is still confused as to what happened.
"It was very strange because the first three laps I was actually going quicker into this corner," he told Autosport.
"I went slower this lap and I suddenly lost the rear, I couldn't see it coming at all.
"After that, I couldn't reproduce the speed I had before, the rear was very loose and the car was difficult to drive in general."
Leclerc, who is held in very high regard by Ferrari, has learned from the weekend in China, even though he didn't get the result he wanted.
"The end result is not what we wanted but there is a lot of positives, I think we have learned many things and we should come back stronger in Baku."
