Guanyu Zhou is already assured of the title 'Rookie of the Year'. Not surprisingly, as he is the only rookie in Formula 1 this season. Is it right that he gets the chance? Opinions are divided on that. It is no secret that the huge sponsorship amount that the Chinese brings was a reason for Alfa Romeo to contract Zhou.
In Formula 2 - in which Zhou competed for the past few seasons - the Chinese driver was not the absolute standout. Although he managed to win several races, Zhou never captured the championship. There are plenty of doubts whether Zhou can break through at the highest level. The Chinese driver himself thinks that this will certainly happen.
In conversation with the Swiss newspaper Blick Zhou tells to have confidence in his own qualities. "I showed in Formula 2 that I have the qualities for F1. I won races there and competed for the title. Now it's up to me to show my qualities in F1 as well. I can't wait to get started. In my first year, I want to really establish myself in Formula 1 first and then I want to score my first World Championship points. "
Zhou will have an experienced teammate alongside him at Alfa Romeo. Valtteri Bottas has come over from Mercedes and should be able to keep Zhou behind him.
