Fernando Alonso is still considering a switch to IndyCar for next season, according to McLaren boss Zak Brown. Alonso has been considering a switch after a long career in F1 that has taken a downward turn since re-joining McLaren.
Alonso raced in the Indy 500 last year as he chases motorsport’s unofficial triple crown and there had been rumours that McLaren were themselves looking to get involved with the IndyCar series. However that does not seem to be a priority for the team now, and Brown says the decision will not be swayed on the basis of Alonso’s future.
Brown told Marca: “The decision does not depend on him. Fernando is not only interested in the triple crown I think he is also targeting the three titles: Formula 1, Indycar and WEC.”
Alonso won this year’s Le Mans 24-hour race with Toyota to complete the second part of the triple crown, leaving just the Indy 500 for the Spaniard, who won the Monaco Grand Prix twice, in 2006 and 2007.
Alonso raced with Michael Andretti's team in last year's Indy 500, although in McLaren colours.
Brown continued, adding: “Fernando is very interested in IndyCar, he likes the series, but he has not decided what he wants to do yet.”
“I have not heard him put a date, that’s Michael’s date, that’s assuming we’re going to go with Michael and we could, but they’re not our only option. We know we have to make a decision soon or we’re going to run out of time to be properly prepared.
“We are in the process of deciding when to enter IndyCar and when we do it will be the beginning of a long commitment to the category.”
It would be a shame if Alonso decided to call time on his career, but he has a brilliant chance to join Graham Hill as the only drivers ever to have claimed the triple crown.
