Lewis Hamilton finishes top of the timesheets in an incident-free FP1. Hamilton was top of the pile for the majority of the session. Red Bull ended up splitting the Ferrari's on their home track finishing 3rd and 5th. Valtteri Bottas backed up his team-mate to complete the 1-2.
The Silver Arrows received plenty of upgrades this weekend as they look to continue their push towards the summer break. And they made a positive start under the upgrades as they dominated most of the session.
McLaren once again had a difficult session. Vandoorne was under an investigation at the hour mark for an unsafe release. The same McLaren then ran wide at the final corner which caused damage to his front nose.
Alonso took over 30 minutes to complete a timed lap, and once he did, it was just a 1:14.6. Seven seconds away from the closest car, Robert Kubica. He eventually improved into 17th place.
The session started under a grey cloud blanket, but conditions were dry. Verstappen remained out after his installation lap. He had the track to himself, and the many Dutch fans stood up to applaud their driver.
Verstappen went on to take the lead which he held throughout the early stages of the session. But as soon as the Mercedes cars came out on track, they took over.
First, Bottas was the dominant Silver Arrow. Once Hamilton found some decent space on the track, he put in some faster laps.
Pierre Gasly was running high up on the leaderboard during the early stages using the super-soft tyre. He was running ahead of the Red Bulls but finished in 10th place. A good start to the weekend for Honda.
After the half-hour mark, spots of rain were reported on track. Nothing developed.
Max Verstappen went for a spin. He reported on his radio "just a 360" and sounded as if he was meant to do it.
Sebastian Vettel went on to fight Bottas for second place and was successful until both Mercedes went under the 1:04s on the ultra-soft tyres.
Mercedes then held the top two spaces for the final 30 minutes of the session.
