The crash of George Russell and Valtteri Bottas might have big consequences for the development of Mercedes. The price that has to be paid for this crash, can now not be used by Mercedes to produce new parts.
Russell and Bottas caused a huge crash in Imola. Neither of the two got blamed for this action, but the bill will have to be paid. Especially Mercedes is in a lot of pain because the front wing of Lewis Hamilton was also written off a lap before this crash. Andrew Shovlin knows that this will be a problem.

Big consequences for Mercedes

''When you have a series of big incidents like this with quite a lot of damage, it's bad for us. We also had Lewis' front wing, so that will definitely exceed the amount we had calculated for this. In an ideal world you want to be able to use those parts indefinitely and you don't break them,'' says Shovlin according to Autosport.com.
The problem in 2021, however, is that Mercedes can no longer make new parts indefinitely, and therefore cannot continue to develop as easily. ''Eventually this will become a big problem and could hit your budget to develop your car further. We have to be careful about this in the future'', concludes a worried Shovlin on behalf of Mercedes.

How abt a kart for one n just fix one car n that will do all the hard work of collecting wins... Bottas' mind is not in the race... he usually falls into a long slump after a disappointing race... this is worse..hahaha! Poor soul!

Well, that is precisely why the budget cap was put in place so that rich teams with very deep pockets do not have the advantage of merely spending endless sums of money to keep on improving their cars, compared to smaller teams which have limited budgets and have been disadvantaged all this while.
As the saying goes, the rich gets richer while the poor gets poorer, so this budget cap is to make it a more level playing field for all teams, which obviously the larger teams would not like as their previously 'unfair advantage' has now been curbed.

Are you advocating bringing Socialism to Formula 1. In other words we are going for Mediocre. We want all the drivers to be the same too? The teams get rich for winning. Money is always a motivator. Once we go down this road and we pay Latifi and Hamilton the same money is that fair. Welcome to life, the better your talent the more you are paid.

Do we want all workers to be paid the same no matter how good they are? Should we all have limits on how much we can pay for our houses, cars, education for our kids? Where does the even playing field end?

I think your example is contradictory to Mech's example. He is talking about spendings and not driver salaries .Budget caps wrt spending on machinery and driver budget caps or so called salary caps are different issue. Driver Salary caps are debatable. Budget cap for spendings on machine is required so that other teams too can get an opportunity to compete. Moreover policing of those budget caps are even more important bec Top teams are still intelligent enough to find ways to circumvent budget cap.

This is crazy... after slowing down the drivers in order not to run out of fuel and preserve the tires, in future they have to be careful not to damage the cars? The problem of the budget cap is ONLY consequent to the choice of an insanely expensive power unit, which has drained all the financial resources of the teams. Until the hybrid engine, there has never been a problem of this kind, so it is clear what is the cause. Not to introduce the budget cap, but to provide a reasonable cost engine, this was (and remains) the real solution.
